While visiting her mom, who abandoned her as a child for a dancing career in New York, Sally discovers her mom’s business partner, Kiwi, dead in their dance studio.
Sally quickly connects with the neighbors who live, like her mom, above the dance studio. She also meets Detective Stevenson of the NYPD and makes an impression by discovering clues his team missed. She learns Kiwi’s life partner, Sandy, is on the police force too, managing security at tough city schools in the neighborhood.
Mom has a role in a new musical, and must also train its young dancers at her studio. Her Pilates and Zumba instructor, Cheryl, and Sally must step up to fill in for Kiwi with dance classes.
At the off-Broadway theater, Sally meets the student stars of Nails on the Chalkboard, the musical her mom dances in with the rest of the adult teachers. Sally’s impressed with her mom’s singing and dancing, but even more impressed by Troy, the Bad Boy in the production. Billy is similarly smitten with Lindy, one of the extroverted Cheerleaders, and gets talked into playing racquetball with her.
As Sally meets more of the cast she realized that most of them train at her mom’s studio and could be suspects in Kiwi’s death. When her mom finds out she sleuthing, Sally just digs deeper. Unfortunately, the killer notices Sally too and takes steps to stop her.
