Movie – ****+ Salmon Fishing in Yemen (2011)
Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt are fantastic in this odd, but compelling, love story.
Book – Red Sister (2005)
Book – ***+ Fantastic post-apocalyptic world where a satellite maintains a habitual zone about the equator and adepts are trained to control earthquake-like powers.
Wizard World 2017 Portland
Movie – ****+ Sweet Bean (2015)
Wonderful story about the meaning of work, self-worth, and social stigmas.
Book – The Warrior Heir (2006)
Book – ***+ An enjoyable early fantasy by Cinda Williams Chima with a main character, Jack, who discovers himself a wizard when he stops taking the medicine that’s suppressed his latent talents his whole life.
Book – The Gray Wolf Throne (2011)
Book – ***+ Book Three of Cinda Williams Chima’s Seven Realms series had a strong beginning and middle, but failed to wrap up the series or complicate the plot for more adventures by the end which was filled with more pageantry than plot.
Movie – ***+ Passengers (2016)
Enjoyable interstellar adventure if you focus on the story, characters, and visuals and not on the science. Space is like the Pacific Ocean only bigger—you just don’t run into big things out there, but if you did you’d see them coming from a long way off and scoot around them.…
Book – The Exiled Queen (2010)
Book – **** Book Two of Cinda Williams Chima’s Seven Realms series is stronger than Book One. Han Alister continues to grow into his new life as a wizard, while Princess Raisa (in disguise) becomes the center of his universe.
